Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use your music? Is it DMCA free?

TLDR: Yes, if you give credit and link to my song.

However, there are exceptions.

  • If what you are doing is not transformative (i.e. slowed versions, sped up versions, or just a blatant re-upload of my song), you cannot do that, and I will strike your video for copyright infringement. It must be something like an animation, using it as background music in a stream or some other transformative work.

  • If you are a business or organization that wishes to perform my works publicly, please purchase a performance license through BMI.

  • If you are a business that wishes to profit off of my music, please reach out to discuss sync licensing at business@krohmusic.com

Why haven’t you been posting anything? It’s been literal years.

TLDR: Extreme writer’s block

Unfortunately for the past 2 years or so I’ve gotten worse and worse writer’s block. Some might call it burnout, others would call it a lack of inspiration. Either way, every time I start a project, I start to hate the project and start a new one. So I have a couple hundred half baked ideas, but no completed songs.

There are many potential causes, here are a few I’ve thought of:

  • Music is now my job rather than an escape from work and stress. It turned from play to work.

  • As my success increased, my need to make “good music” also increased

  • As the length of this time away from posting has dragged on, I feel like I have to come back with a bang to justify all the time not spent releasing music.

  • I have a lack of inspirational material because I work on music all day

  • My space is not well suited to recording vocals and writing lyrics because I have roommates.

How did you learn to produce music?

I had a strong background in improv piano, but I taught myself everything by just experimenting in Logic and listening to how other artists I liked made their music. Eventually, I reached a point where I needed to start looking up YouTube videos to learn specific things such as mixing and mastering.

If you were to start over, how would you go about learning music?

I would start by focusing on rhythm by learning some sort of percussion instrument, and then focus on learning improv and classical piano. If you learn those two things, you have pretty much all of music covered. I would also throw in a healthy amount of music theory.

Then I would look for a music production course either at a college or online and take that.

What software do you use?

I use Logic Pro X for production and Final Cut Pro for video editing. I also have some plug-ins I’ve paid for. If those companies decide to sponsor me, I’ll probably put links or something here eventually.
